Gradient compression and medical effects
Applying a measured amount of compression to the leg is the basis for the management of venous conditions. Specially designed medical hosiery applies gradient compression to the leg. JOBST® medical legwear provides an effective therapy for the treatment of venous and lymphatic disorders.
The compression stockings exert a precisely defined pressure on your leg (medical pressure curve). That is: in the ankle area, the required pressure is strongest; running up the pressure decreases. The degree of squeezing or compression gradually decreases up the leg. This compression, generally expressed in mmHg (millimeters of mercury) provides two main benefits. The most beneficial effects of compression are its effects on the capillaries and tissue spaces.Compression increases the pressure in the tissues beneath the skin thus reducing excess leakage of fluid from the capillaries and increasing absorption of tissue fluid by the capillaries and lymphatic vessels. Compression therefore reduces and helps prevent swelling. The physical presence of the stocking also helps control the size (diameter) of superficial veins beneath the stocking. The stocking does not allow these superficial veins to over expand with blood. This action helps prevent “pooling”. The venous blood then flows more quickly up the leg towards the heart.
The blood circulation in the leg is improved significantly. For an individual, effective relief for tired, heavy and aching legs and for venous disorders and lymphatic diseases. The precondition for such relief is that the medical gradient compression hosiery prescribed or recommended by your doctor is worn regularly and consistently – to prevent the blood stagnating in the veins.
The application of gradient compression by means of medical hosiery is an effective measure in cases of tired, aching or swollen feet, ankles and legs. It is also used after sclerotherapy or vein surgery. JOBST® compression stockings offer a wide range of different compression classes.
Compression Garment Fitting
Sizing for medical compression stockings is based on the circumferences of the leg. It is best to measure early in the day before swelling occurs.
Our specially trained nurses can assist you with proper product selection, measuring, and fitting.
